Get connected to the best on-line gay, lesbian and bisexual community information network in the world. Since Multicom-4 (a/k/a Cactus-800) was introduced to the public in July, 1979, it has attracted hundreds of members and many sources of community information. So climb aboard for a test drive on our local road on the "Information Highway". Multicom-4 is free to access but is not free to run. Multicom-4 is funded by donations and grants, and volunteers do much of the work to keep it running. Community involvement grows daily! What is Multicom-4 for? ----------------------- Like a public library, Multicom-4 offers a new tool for browsing information provided by gay, lesbian and bisexual organizations. It also connects you to a world community via the "Internet". What makes learning about Multicom-4 worth your time and effort -- you will be able to use what you are learning in a variety of ways and you will have a very good time doing it. There will be long-distance charges if you call from outside your local calling area. A modem is a piece of electronic equipment that allows a computer to send and receive information over telephone lines. You can currently connect to Multicom-4 using modems that operate at speeds of from 300 to 28800 BPS. Most modems are sold with a basic communications program but better programs can be purchased at any computer store. How do I set up my Communications Program: ------------------------------------------ Program Setting Slower Modems Higher Speed Modems --------------- -------------- ------------------- Phone number: (716) 473-4070 (716) 473-4070 Modem Speed: up to 2400 bps up to 28,800 bps Port Speed: same as Modem 57,600 bps Flow control: None Hardware Data bits: 8 Parity bits: None Stop bit: 1 (known as 8N1) Duplex: Full Terminal Emulation: ansi (or BBS ANSI) Terminal size: 24 lines, 80 columns Local echo: Off Conversions (CR to CRLF): Off Destructive Backspace: On If you don't have "touch-tone" service, select pulse dialing. ** If you have a 14,400 bps modem, set your software to "Hardware" Flow Control (RTS/CTS) and turn off Software Flow Control (XON/XOFF). First Logon: ------------ Set your communications program to dial. When your computer connects, you will hear a high pitched squawking -- this is your computer connecting to Multicom-4. As soon as this is complete, your program will display a message that it has "connected". You should get a message that looks something like this: Auto-sensing... The MULTICOM-4 BBS NETWORK (Channel: 2, 14400 baud) Can your terminal display ANSI graphics (Y/N)? Type "Y" and then ENTER if your terminal can support ANSI colour and graphics, "N" and then ENTER is it can't, or you're not sure (do NOT type the quotation marks!). Wait for the "logon" message and type "new" and press the ENTER key. You will be prompted respond to a series of questions to establish your account. Take your time, and read the questions closely, as inaccurate answers will cause delays with validating your account. Once online, you will be able to access our NEW USER menus and help pages, send E-Mail to the SYSOP and correct changes to your sign-up data --nothing else.
